Getting Your First Massage: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Your First Massage: Everything You Need to Know
If you've never had a professional massage before, it's completely normal to feel a little uncertain about what to expect. Questions about etiquette, privacy, pressure, and what to wear are among the most common things first-time clients ask.
Here's a complete, honest guide to help you feel prepared and comfortable from the moment you walk in.
Before Your Appointment
What to Wear (or Not Wear)
You'll undress to your comfort level — most clients undress completely or keep their underwear on. You'll be covered by a sheet and blanket throughout the session, and only the area being worked on will be uncovered at any time. Your privacy and modesty are always protected.
If you're uncomfortable undressing, let your therapist know. Techniques like chair massage and Thai Yoga Stretching are performed fully clothed.
Arrive a Few Minutes Early
Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes before your appointment. You'll fill out a brief intake form about your health history, areas of concern, and pressure preferences. This helps your therapist customize the session for your specific needs.
Avoid Heavy Meals Beforehand
You don't need to fast, but a heavy meal right before a massage can make lying face-down uncomfortable. A light snack is fine.
Communicate Any Health Conditions
Let your therapist know about any injuries, surgeries, skin conditions, or health concerns — including pregnancy. This information helps them adapt their technique to keep you safe and comfortable.
During Your Session
The Intake Conversation
Before you get on the table, your therapist will briefly review your intake form and ask about your goals for the session. This is your opportunity to mention specific areas of tension, pressure preferences (light, medium, or firm), and anything you'd like them to avoid.
Don't be shy — this conversation is what makes the difference between a generic massage and one that's genuinely therapeutic for you.
Getting on the Table
Your therapist will leave the room while you undress and get under the sheet. They'll knock before re-entering. You'll start face-down (unless you have a condition that makes this uncomfortable), with your face resting in a padded face cradle.
During the Massage
Your therapist will work systematically through the areas you discussed, checking in about pressure as they go. It's completely normal — and encouraged — to speak up if the pressure is too light or too deep, or if you'd like them to spend more time on a particular area.
You don't need to make conversation. Many clients close their eyes and drift into a meditative state. Others prefer to chat. Both are perfectly fine.
Draping
You'll be covered by a sheet at all times. Your therapist will only undrape the specific area they're working on — your back, one leg at a time, etc. — and re-drape it before moving to the next area.
After Your Session
Take Your Time Getting Up
Sit up slowly after your session — it's common to feel lightheaded or deeply relaxed. Your therapist will give you a few minutes of privacy to re-dress.
Drink Water
Massage increases circulation and releases metabolic waste from muscles. Drinking water afterward helps your body flush these byproducts and prevents post-massage soreness.
You May Feel Sore
Especially after a deeper massage, it's normal to feel mild muscle soreness for 24–48 hours — similar to how you feel after a good workout. This is a sign that the tissue was worked effectively. A warm bath or gentle stretching can help.
Schedule Your Next Appointment
The benefits of massage compound with regular sessions. Before you leave, consider booking your next appointment — many clients find that having a standing monthly appointment makes it easier to prioritize their self-care.
A Note on Comfort and Trust
Your comfort is the absolute priority. If at any point during your session you feel uncomfortable — with the pressure, the draping, or anything else — please speak up immediately. A professional therapist will always adjust without question.
At Berkana BodyWorks, we work hard to create an environment where every client feels safe, respected, and genuinely cared for. We hope your first massage is the beginning of a long and beneficial practice.
See you on the table.
