Prenatal Massage: Safe, Effective, and Deeply Needed
Pregnancy transforms the body in profound ways — and not all of them are comfortable. Lower back pain, hip tightness, swollen ankles, sciatic nerve pain, and relentless fatigue are common companions through all three trimesters.
Prenatal massage is specifically designed to address these challenges safely, providing relief for both body and mind during one of life's most demanding seasons.
Is Prenatal Massage Safe?
Yes — when performed by a trained therapist, prenatal massage is safe throughout all three trimesters of a healthy pregnancy. At Berkana BodyWorks, our prenatal massage therapists are specially trained in pregnancy positioning, contraindicated pressure points, and trimester-specific adaptations.
Important: Always consult your OB or midwife before beginning prenatal massage, particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy, placenta previa, preeclampsia, or a history of preterm labor.
How Prenatal Massage Differs from Regular Massage
Positioning
Standard face-down positioning is not safe during pregnancy due to pressure on the abdomen and uterus. At Berkana, we use a specially designed body cushion system that allows you to lie face-down comfortably and safely — with a contoured cutout that fully supports the belly without compression.
We also use side-lying positioning with supportive bolsters, which is particularly comfortable in the second and third trimesters.
Pressure and Focus Areas
Certain pressure points — particularly around the ankles and inner calves — are traditionally avoided during pregnancy due to their association with uterine stimulation. Our therapists are trained in these contraindications and adjust their technique accordingly.
Pressure is generally lighter than a standard therapeutic massage, with a focus on the areas that carry the most pregnancy-related strain: lower back, hips, glutes, upper back, and shoulders.
Benefits by Trimester
First Trimester
- Reduces nausea and headaches associated with hormonal shifts - Relieves early lower back tension as the uterus begins to grow - Decreases anxiety and promotes emotional well-beingSecond Trimester
- Addresses sciatic nerve pain as the growing uterus puts pressure on the sciatic nerve - Relieves hip and pelvic girdle pain as ligaments loosen - Reduces swelling in the legs and feet by improving lymphatic circulation - Improves sleep qualityThird Trimester
- Provides significant relief from the weight-bearing strain of late pregnancy - Reduces edema (swelling) in the lower extremities - Helps prepare the body for labor by relaxing the pelvic floor and hip muscles - Reduces anxiety about labor and deliveryWhat to Expect at Your Session
When you arrive, your therapist will review your pregnancy history, current trimester, and any areas of particular discomfort. They'll explain the positioning options and ensure you're completely comfortable before beginning.
Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes. You'll be professionally draped throughout — only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your comfort and privacy are our top priorities.
After your session, drink plenty of water and take a few minutes to rest before driving. It's normal to feel deeply relaxed — even sleepy — after a prenatal massage.
How Often Should You Get Prenatal Massage?
Most pregnant clients benefit from monthly sessions in the first trimester, bi-weekly sessions in the second trimester, and weekly sessions in the final weeks before their due date. This schedule can be adjusted based on your comfort level and specific needs.
Our Wellness Club membership is a popular choice for expectant mothers — it makes regular prenatal massage affordable throughout the entire pregnancy.
